The Hermit as a Person
What it means as a person
As a person, the Hermit upright is a reflective thinker who is happiest alone and shares hard-won insight; reversed, the same seeker turned isolated, aloof or lost in thought.
The Hermit upright as a person
Upright, the Hermit is someone who does their best thinking alone and isn't lonely there. They may skip the party and call you the next day with a question that stays with you for a week. Small talk wears them out; a long walk or one real conversation restores them. They are often careful, observant and slow to give advice, but when they do, it has usually been tested on their own life first. On the card an old figure in gray looks down from a snowy summit, a lantern held out over the dark, and this person's wisdom works the same way: steady, modest, and offered to whoever makes the climb.
The Hermit reversed as a person
Reversed, the Hermit's solitude stops restoring them and starts sealing them off. Calls go unanswered for weeks, invitations get declined out of habit, and their world shrinks to a few rooms and a great deal of thinking. They may grow critical of everyone from a distance, sure that people are too shallow to be worth the effort. Or it flips, and they can't stand their own company at all, filling every quiet hour with noise. Either way the lantern is still lit; it just isn't pointed at anyone. Often the kindest thing is one small, low-pressure invitation back into ordinary life, offered without a lecture.
The Hermit: who it can stand for
The Hermit, card nine, is more a temperament than a single person. It covers the mentor who speaks rarely and well, the researcher absorbed in one problem for decades, the friend who moved to the mountains, the grandparent who goes quiet and then says the thing you needed. The image is traditionally an old man with a staff, but anyone who seeks clarity through solitude belongs here. The Golden Dawn, a Victorian society for the study of magic, set the Hermit under Virgo, the careful, discerning sign of the harvest.
How you might recognize them
- Would rather have one long talk than ten short ones
- Owns more books than chairs
- Gives advice rarely, and only when asked
- Takes long walks alone to think things over
The Hermit as a partner
In love, the Hermit is a loyal, thoughtful partner who loves deeply and needs a lot of room. They tend to show affection through attention and honest talk rather than grand gestures, and they are drawn to people with a rich inner life of their own. Time apart isn't rejection to them; it is how they come back fuller. Reversed, the same person may withdraw for long stretches, leaving a partner feeling shut out.
The Hermit as a boss or colleague
At work, the Hermit is the specialist who goes deep on a hard problem and surfaces with an answer nobody else saw. They need long, uninterrupted blocks of time and tend to become the quiet expert others consult. Given a team, they would rather mentor than manage, sharing what they know with those who seek it out. Reversed, they may disappear into their work, resist collaboration, or sit on insight the team badly needs.
When the card is you
As a picture of you, the Hermit may be speaking to a need for quiet that is part of how you stay well. Perhaps you have been stepping back to think lately, and the retreat is doing you good. The card may also ask, gently, whether the distance still nourishes you. Solitude chosen freely tends to send you back with something to give. A lantern helps most when someone else can see it too.
The question underneath
Is my solitude still feeding me, or has it started keeping people away?
