Temperance as a Person

Temperance tarot card, Rider–Waite–Smith
Upright
Steady, balanced and even-tempered
Reversed
Out of balance, rushed or overdoing it

What it means as a person

As a person, the Temperance card upright is someone patient and balanced who knows how much is enough; reversed, the same person rushed, overcommitted or swinging between extremes.

Temperance upright as a person

Upright, Temperance describes a person with an unusual sense of proportion. They seem to know how much is enough, of work, of rest, of honesty, of comfort, and they adjust a little at a time instead of lurching between extremes. People tend to calm down around them. They are often the one who can sit with two friends who are not speaking and find the sentence both can accept. On the card an angel pours water from one golden cup into another, one foot on dry ground and one in a pool, and this person has the same knack for living in two worlds at once without spilling much.

Temperance reversed as a person

Reversed, Temperance describes the same balanced person when the mix has gone wrong. They may be swinging between extremes: weeks of discipline, then a weekend of excess; total calm, then a sharp outburst. Or one part of life has quietly taken over, usually work or caring for someone, and everything else runs on scraps. Impatience is common here. A person who normally lets things settle may start forcing outcomes, or trying to please everyone at once and pleasing no one. Nothing is ruined. Often they need to slow the pour, drop one commitment, and let their usual steadiness return in its own time.

Temperance: who it can stand for

Temperance can stand for anyone whose gift is balance: the night-shift nurse who never seems hurried, the mediator, the cook who seasons by taste, the parent who can settle a room without raising their voice. Coming straight after Death, it can also describe someone rebuilding after a loss, patiently and a little each day. Any gender suits it; the calm is usually earned. The Golden Dawn, the London order whose table of correspondences gives each card a planet, sign or element, links Temperance with Sagittarius, the archer.

How you might recognize them

  • Knows when to stop, and stops
  • Calms an argument without taking sides
  • Rarely rushed, even on a hectic day
  • Answers a heated message later, and kindly

Temperance as a partner

In love, Temperance is a steady, patient partner who builds closeness slowly and keeps it. They are good at compromise that feels fair to both people, and at blending two lives, two families and two ways of loading the dishwasher without either person disappearing. Grand gestures may matter less to them than daily adjustments. Reversed, they may give too much and then withdraw, or lose patience with a pace they usually respect, and naming what feels out of balance tends to help.

Temperance as a boss or colleague

At work, Temperance is the colleague who brings two departments together and somehow makes the meeting shorter. They tend to be good at integration, process, mediation, healthcare and any craft that depends on getting proportions right. As a boss they keep a sustainable pace and notice burnout before it shows. Reversed, the same person may overcommit, say yes to every request, and then run short of the patience they are known for.

When the card is you

When Temperance describes you, you may be the steady one, the person others come to when they need to slow down. Perhaps you have worked hard for that calm. The card also asks what is in your own two cups right now, and whether the mix still suits you or only suits everyone around you. You rarely need an overhaul. Sometimes one honest change in the pour is enough.

The question underneath

Which cup am I filling too full, and which one is running dry?

Asking how they feel rather than what they are like? Temperance as feelings.

Asking something plainer? Temperance yes or no.

Every card as a person

For reflection, not forecasting. A card can describe a way of being; it cannot tell you who a person is or what they might do.
