Strength as a Person
What it means as a person
As a person, Strength upright is someone gentle and patient whose courage shows as calm; reversed, the same steady soul turned short-tempered, doubting or worn down from keeping the peace.
Strength upright as a person
Upright, Strength describes a person whose courage is mostly patience. They can calm a panicking friend, a snarling dog or a furious customer without raising their voice. They feel their own temper and appetites fully but rarely let them drive. Others often underestimate them at first because they are soft-spoken, and only later notice that this person never seems to buckle. The woman in white on the card closes a lion's mouth with bare hands and no strain on her face, and that is their manner: firm, warm and in no hurry. Their kindness isn't weakness. It is strength they have chosen to use gently, and it tends to last.
Strength reversed as a person
Reversed, Strength describes a patient person whose composure has run out or turned against them. The break can go two ways. They may finally snap after months of swallowing irritation, and the outburst surprises everyone, themselves included. Or they turn the force inward: doubting their abilities, apologizing for having needs, keeping the peace at any price. The lion they once soothed may be loose, or locked up so tightly that its energy turns into exhaustion. You may notice impatience, sharpness over small things, or a quiet giving up. Often they have been the calm one for too long, and what helps is room to be angry, tired or afraid without managing it for anyone else.
Strength: who it can stand for
Strength, card eight in the Rider–Waite–Smith order, describes a kind of power rather than a particular person. It fits anyone whose force comes out as gentleness: the teacher who settles a loud class without shouting, the parent who stays calm through a toddler's storm, the vet tech holding a frightened animal still, the friend who sits with you through a panic until it passes. The figure is a woman, but the quality is open to everyone. For the Golden Dawn, a Victorian magical society, Strength is Leo, the lion's sign.
How you might recognize them
- Lowers their voice when others raise theirs
- Animals and small children trust them fast
- Holds a boundary without slamming the door
- Admits fear and does the hard thing anyway
Strength as a partner
In love, Strength is a patient, steady partner who can stay present through your worst moods without taking them personally. They tend to love with warmth and loyalty, and they handle conflict by slowing it down rather than winning it. Their softness has a spine: they say no when it matters. Reversed, they may swallow resentment until it bursts, or lose confidence and lean on the relationship for constant reassurance.
Strength as a boss or colleague
At work, Strength is the colleague people want in the room when tempers run high. They are calm and persuasive in a quiet way, and good with difficult clients and prickly coworkers. When they manage people, they lead through trust and correct without humiliating anyone. Reversed, they may be worn thin from absorbing everyone's stress, lose patience in sharp bursts, or doubt their own authority and let problems slide.
When the card is you
If Strength is your card here, it may be naming a courage you rarely get credit for: the patience to stay with what is hard instead of fighting it. Perhaps you are the calm one in your family or on your team. Then the question turns around: who calms you? The gentleness you give everyone else holds up better when a share of it is turned toward yourself, including the parts of you that roar.
The question underneath
What part of me needs company more than control right now?

Asking how they feel rather than what they are like? Strength as feelings.
Asking something plainer? Strength yes or no.
